Water damage is usually not the result of a sudden event like a burst pipe or storm flooding; in most cases, it happens over a period of weeks, months, or even years as a leaking pipe or clogged gutters slowly cause significant deterioration to your home. If your home has suffered damage, it’s essential that water restoration be carried out as possible to restore safety and integrity to your home.

Water damage cleanup is best handled by professionals, especially when you are unsure of the cause of the damage and there’s a risk of mold or contamination. Restoration services begin with isolating and fixing the cause of the damage before removing standing water and any possessions and furniture that need to be treated and restored. When this work involves health hazards like a sewer back-up or suspected bacterial growth, extra steps must be taken to remove contaminated materials and sanitize the home. After decontamination and a period of dry-out, the real restoration begins to return your home to its original condition.

As a full-service restoration company in Anaheim, CA, we help from beginning to end by providing all of the services necessary to restore your home, including pump-out, pack outs, carpet cleaning, damage repair, contamination cleanup, and mold removal.

Our Water Restoration Process

Restoring a home after water damage can be fairly simple — or it can be an in-depth process that requires rebuilding sections of the home. To restore your home to a safe and livable condition, the water must be removed before materials are decontaminated and fully dried. This water restoration process should begin as soon as possible because standing water and wet materials create the perfect environment for bacteria and mold, which can start growing in as little as 24 hours. Here’s an overview of the water restoration process after a flood, burst pipe, or any other type of water damage.

Inspection

Before work can begin, an expert will need to assess the extent of the damage in your home. This inspection is important because it is used to determine the best course of action for restoring your home and avoiding hazards. The inspection will also determine the category and class of water damage.

There are 3 categories of water damage:

  • Category 1 involves water from a clean source like a burst water supply line or toilet tank.
  • Category 2 involves “grey water” which may be contaminated. This includes water from a washing machine, toilet with urine, or dishwasher.
  • Category 3 involves “black water” which comes from a very unsanitary source. Water damage from sewage, rivers, or water that has been standing too long can be a serious health risk.

There are also 4 classes of water damage that outline how the property will need to be restored:

  • Class 1 affects part of a room with little moisture.
  • Class 2 affects an entire room with water in the walls and carpet.
  • Class 3 affects the entire walls and may have come through the ceiling. Most of the area will be saturated. This is the worst type of water damage.
  • Class 4 will require specialty drying because damage has affected materials like concrete, stone, or hardwood.
Water Extraction

The first stage of the clean-up is extracting the water. Commercial-grade pumps and wet-dry vacuums are usually used to remove water, but the type of equipment will depend on the amount of water. It’s essential that this step be completed within 24-48 hours to prevent mold from taking hold in your home.

Drying

Once standing water is removed and absorbent surfaces have been thoroughly vacuumed, it’s time to dry and dehumidify the space. This step will remove remaining moisture so clean-up and restoration can begin. Drying the home can take several weeks and involves a variety of equipment such as large fans, dehumidifiers, and special floor heaters.

Cleaning

After the space is fully dry, it’s time to clean and sanitize all belongings and materials that were damaged but salvageable. This step prevents bacterial growth and mold. Window treatments, clothing, upholstery, and carpet (when it can be saved) are treated with an antimicrobial product. Air scrubbers can also be used to remove harmful particles from the air. Products will be applied to wood and other building materials to inhibit and kill remaining bacteria and mold.

Home Restoration

The actual restoration is the most time-consuming part of the process. This may involve installing new drywall, replacing flooring, upgrading plumbing, and more. Additional structural repairs may also be needed at this stage.

What Causes Water Damage?

Water damage comes in many forms. Sometimes damage can be sudden and unexpected, such as a burst pipe, but it can also be slow and hard to detect. It’s important to understand the source of the water damage in your home so it can be corrected before restoration begins. Here are the most common causes of water damage we see.

Burst Pipe

Burst and leaking pipes are among the most common culprits of residential water damage. Leaks can be the result of an aging plumbing system that has developed pinhole leaks, high water pressure, roots growing into sewer lines, or even backed-up drains that contribute to a leak.

Overflowing or Leaking Toilet

Sometimes water damage from a toilet is sudden and extreme, but it can also be the result of a slow and steady leak. These leaks can be an even bigger problem because the damage can go on for some time and damage your flooring and the structural integrity of your home.

Leaking Water Heater

Your water heater is used day and night, whether you think about it or not. Out-of-sight, out-of-mind should never apply to a water heater, though. When a tank water heater is not maintained or reaches the end of its life, it can develop a leak in the tank. These leaks can quickly flood your home. Sometimes water heater leaks are also found at the drain valve.

Leaking Washing Machine

The most common source of a washing machine leak is actually the supply lines. These lines deliver hot and cold water to the washing machine, but a problem in the lines can leave water dripping or worse — pouring all over your laundry room. Old PVC or rubber lines should be replaced with braided stainless steel.

Storms

A storm can lead to water damage in a few ways. Heavy rainfall can cause over-saturated ground and basement or foundation damage. Surging and overflowing bodies of water can even push water directly into your home. If the storm comes with high winds or hail, you may suffer roof damage that allows water inside.

Backed-Up Sewer Line

A backed-up sewer line is every homeowner’s worst nightmare. Some sewer backups are caused by storms, but they can also be the result of a clog in your sewer line that forces water back into your home. This form of water damage is dangerous as the contaminated water can be a health risk.

Sump Pump Failure

Your sump pump has an important job: keeping your basement dry. When it fails, you may be facing a flooded basement when heavy rains come.

Roof and Gutter Problems

If your roof or gutter system is compromised, water can have an easy entrance into your home. There are many ways in which roof problems can contribute to water damage, and not all are actually caused by the roof itself. If your roof is in fairly good condition, the problem can be damaged flashing, clogged gutters, clogged roof vents, or chimney damage.

You can mitigate this risk by having your roof inspected once a year. Make sure your gutters are cleaned regularly to prevent clogs. Clogged gutters can allow water to wick right under the roof and into your attic. Your downspout should also direct water several feet away from the home. If water is deposited too close to your home, it can cause foundation damage and water in the basement.
